"Physicists and Lyricists" Photo Exhibition Launched At 2024 World Youth Festival

On March 3, on Sirius Federal Territory, the Vyzov Foundation for the Development of Scientific and Cultural Relations presented a photo exhibition called "Physicists and Lyricists" that brings together art and science. During the opening ceremony, Andrei Fursenko, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation; Sergei Novikov, Chief of the Presidential Directorate for Social Projects; Denis Sekirinsky, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation; Leonid Shlyakhover, President of the Vyzov Foundation, and other guests spoke to journalists.

Ten scientists and ten cultural figures, the best of the best, are photographed in a solemn setting to emphasize that these individuals are the pride of our country and real role models.

The photo exhibition featured winners of prestigious awards, including the Presidential Prize in Science and Innovation for Young Scientists, the VYZOV National Prize for Future Technologies, the Moscow Government Prize for Young Scientists, the Sber Science Award, the Russian Federation National Award in Literature and Art, the Russian Government Award in Culture, the Golden Mask National Theater Award, and the Golden Eagle National Film Award. Laureates of these awards include actress Yulia Peresild, conductor and violist Yuri Bashmet, actor Yevgeny Mironov, biochemist Alexander Gabibov, pharmacologist and neuroscientist Raul Gainetdinov, physicist Ilya Semerikov, and others. The photographer of the project is Vladimir Shirokov.

"The fact that so many people are here today to see this exhibition demonstrates that science is thriving in Russia. The level of interest in science is at an all-time high. As the President of Russia emphasized in his recent address, a great deal of attention is paid to the advancement of science. This is also evident in the new strategy for scientific and technological development of our country. We have created the necessary foundation and have the right talents. All we need to achieve great results is to work hard," said Andrei Fursenko, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation.

Sergei Novikov, Chief of the Presidential Directorate for Social Projects, emphasized that Russia has ensured all the necessary conditions for people to pursue their passion and achieve success, and the protagonists of the exhibition serve as a vivid example of this.

"The protagonists of the photo exhibition are role models, the living proof that if you follow your dreams, success and recognition will follow, and you will pursue your passion. Russia has all the necessary conditions to help you unlock your potential. I think if we asked the participants of the 2017 World Festival of Youth and Students which country would send a film crew to space, no one would think of Russia. But we did it. It is the combination of audacity and great teamwork that creates a miracle. The exhibition shows people who have fulfilled their dreams and became successful in order to inspire young people from 190 countries of the world who have gathered today here, in Sirius," he said.

"The combination of science and art is extremely relevant today, and it also has deep historical roots," reminded Denis Sekirinsky, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. He pointed to the examples of some of the oldest organizations in Russia: the Russian Academy of Sciences, which is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year, and the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet founded in 1738.

"The opening of the photo exhibition is one of the highlights of the Decade of Science and Technology, along with the Congress of Young Scientists that is held annually here in Sirius. We are happy to invite everyone to this event," said Denis Sekirinsky.

"We firmly believe that scientists deserve to be in the spotlight alongside outstanding actors, musicians, and directors. However, too often those involved in science remain behind the scenes. Our goal is to change this through offering a new perspective. We are constantly on the lookout for new formats and unconventional combinations in order to make conversations about science, a complicated topic, exciting and engaging for a wide audience. That is why our projects are built on the interplay of science and culture, on the dialogue between scientists and artists," said Leonid Shlyakhover, President of the Vyzov Foundation for the Development of Scientific and Cultural Relations.

The "Physicists & Lyricists" project expands the boundaries of traditional photography. On the website наукаплюскультура.рф people whose photos are featured at the exhibition share their insights on the links between science and art, and on how these two fields mutually enrich one another. The website is expected to include a guide on awards in science and culture, as well as other valuable resources.

Yulia Peresild, theater and film actress, laureate of the Russian Federation National Award in Literature and Art who was part of a space mission, says: "The fusion of space exploration and cinematic production is a great example of collaboration between physicists and lyricists. When they come together, they produce an extraordinary and remarkable discovery. That was the essence of our space mission."

Pavlos Lagoudakis, a physicist and recipient of the VYZOV National Prize for Future Technologies, noted: "Scientists and artists are in a quest for beauty. Some create it, while others explore it. Artists strive to express their emotions through creativity, and this is how beauty is born. Scientists, on the other hand, seek beauty in the world around us and often find it in places others might not even look at."
